Norbert Tijhuis Tubbergen NL says: Thij (village square) A thij, tie or thie is the name for a central square in medieval villages. The name occurs in the Dutch province of Overijssel and in a part of Germany that extends from the Münsterland to the vicinity of the cities of Hanover and Magdeburg. De (Middle Low German: Dat (= Het, Das)) thij, tie or thie is a usually walled square in the middle of a village, often with a flat stone, that served as a conference table for the tribunal, a local court for local disputes, for example about inheritance boundaries or grazing rights. The chairman of such a court was called a farmer's judge. A thie was often grassy, and sometimes the place was on a knoll or near a spring or water pump. Later the thie was also used as a place for dance parties, etc. Villages without a local court generally did not have thie. There are villages that had both a thie and a green. The green was then a meeting place outside the village, the thie was inside it. The word was pronounced and spelled differently according to the peculiarities of the local dialect; the variety is great. In East Friesland, for example, the variant Tea occurs. This name has nothing to do with the drink of that name. The term thie is probably etymologically related to Old English tig or tih and Old Norse teigr. Both words were designations for a farm, a square or a piece of land. In the dative, the dative case, the word takes the ending -e. That is why it is likely that the family name Ten Tije, which occurs in the eastern Netherlands, has the meaning: living on or near the thij. Before ca. 1700 the Dutch preposition te reigned the genitive case. Surnames such as Tijhuis or Tijhaar can also refer to a thij. The geographical name thij occurs in the Netherlands in Oldenzaal and Steenwijkerland, among others.
